This is a huge event, celebrating tasteful interpretations of the nude in all media, and held in a warehouse-turned-sophisticated-gallery in the cutting-edge Wynwood Art District of Miami. My newest work, Cymbella Triptych, will be displayed at this show.
I believe this work to be unique in its particular embodiment of what knitters would call a “sheep-to-shawl” process—that is, the performing of all the steps in removing wool from a sheep and turning it into a shawl. In this case, the process extends from collecting a water sample in the wild (in the Florida Everglades) to completing a large knitted artwork featuring a single organism found in the sample. It may also be the largest physical image of a diatom ever produced, at more than 23,000 times the length of the actual specimen. It has let me combine artwork, knitting, microscopy and diatoms, all things I’ve long been interested in.
